OB/GYNs Perform Cancer Surgery On Gorilla
Asheboro, NC — Doctors from across the state came together to operate on a Gorilla who lives at the NC Zoo.
Medical professionals from the North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine (NCCRM) and Duke University Medical Center came together to preform a hysterectomy on ‘Donna’ a 39-year-old Western Lowland Gorilla.
Donna was originally treated in November 2007 after being diagnosed with endometrial cancer.
The 400-pound gorilla is now back to normal.
“Donna is doing great. She recovered from anesthesia very quickly and began taking oral fluids and some fruit the morning after surgery,” says Ryan DeVoe, Senior Veterinarian at the NC Zoological Park. “She is one tough monkey.”
