Visitors Flock To See Zoo’s New Arrival

VISITORS have been flocking to see Blackpool Zoo’s new arrival, a male baby giraffe called Timber.

The 6ft tall youngster is proving to be the zoo’s star attraction this Christmas with fans young and old visiting the East Park Drive site to catch a glimpse of the new born.

Timber was born at 8.30am on Monday 1st December and his progress is being closely monitored by the giraffe keepers and the zoo’s vet.  He is currently taller than the keepers and could grow up to about 19ft tall.

Jude Rothwell, Communications Manager at Blackpool Zoo, said:  “There has been quite a lot of interest in our baby giraffe.  Babies are always popular, but young giraffes have a magic all of their own.  Timber is very handsome and cute, so you can see why he’s so popular!

“Timber is the first baby giraffe we have had at the zoo so it is very exciting for us all.  Mother and baby are doing really well, Quiver is proving to be an excellent mum and Timber is getting taller and stronger by the day.”

Giraffes returned to Blackpool Zoo earlier this year after a break of more than 17 years.

The three female giraffes Quiver, Ciara and Sive arrived from Fota Zoo near Cork, Ireland, in July when Blackpool Zoo celebrated the official opening of its new enclosure, Giraffe Heights.
