Zoo worker bitten during feeding
The Australia Zoo reptile handler bitten by a snake on Wednesday was feeding the animal at the time of the incident.
Zoo director Wes Manion said the 28-year-old received a bite to his finger late on Wednesday when trying to feed the king brown snake a mouse.
Mr Manion said the man, who had 10 year’s experience handling snakes, was not alone at the time. His companion called for assistance and an ambulance was called as soon as possible.
The man was rushed to Nambour General Hospital where he remained in a stable condition in intensive care.
Mr Manion said king brown snakes were dangerous.
“There are a lot of venomous snakes in Australia but bites are rare,” he said.
“They like to keep out of our way (and) will usually only bite when they feel threatened or if they are stood on or people try to catch them.
“You should never try to kill or catch a snake.”
Mr Manion said the handler loved snakes and would be disappointed with himself.
In unrelated incidents, a person was bitten by a snake at Cooroibah and another person was bitten in Palmwoods, also on Wednesday.
Experts have warned snakes are particularly active in the warmer weather.
