Young bonobo dies at Jacksonville Zoo
By Charlie Patton
Kaleb, the youngest of 11 bonobos at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, died suddenly Friday afternoon.
Zoo executive director Dennis Pate said he was “shocked and saddened” by the death of Kaleb, 4, who was born at the Jacksonville Zoo on May 9, 2004.
Bonobos, a form of chimpanzee, are an endangered species found in the wild only in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Zoo officials said there are about 200 bonobos in zoos across the world.
Kaleb’s mother, Kuni, came to the Jacksonville Zoo in June, 2003, from the San Diego Zoo. His father, Bosondjo, was the patriarch of the Jacksonville Zoo’s bonobo family until his death from heart disease in 2005, zoo officials said.
Kaleb was found non-responsive at about 1 p.m. Friday. Efforts to resuscitate him failed.
A necropsy and other tests will be performed to determine the cause of death.
