Zoo Dedicates New Learning Center

$1.5 Million Building Provides Educational Resources

The Honolulu Zoo dedicated a new learning center Thursday, providing a new building and equipment for numerous zoo functions.

The $1.5 million classroom building will be furnished by the nonprofit Honolulu Zoo Society and will be used for education programs, evening lectures and volunteer services.

Fifth graders from Jefferson Elementary school across the street were some of the first zoo patrons to enjoy the new center Thursday.

Honolulu Zoo Director Stephen Walker hopes that everyone will enjoy the many resources that the new learning center will provide.

“We can do presentations, we do activities, crafts, all different kinds of things where we can have a controlled environment and teach the kids about the natural world,” Walker said.

The new center is located next to the keiki zoo.
