What’s new at the Alexandria Zoo? At least 2 new events on schedule

By David Dinsmore

The Alexandria Zoo has welcomed some newborn animals into the family recently, but babies are not the only things new at the zoo.

At least two new events will fill the zoo’s schedule this year in addition to its normal myriad of seasonal activities.

The zoo will host its first Enrichment Day on June 27, Acting Director Lee Ann Whitt said. During the day, zookeepers will provide the animals with something beyond their basic needs, such as objects with which to play or environmental additions like a fragrance. The public is welcome to observe these interactions and ask the zookeepers questions.

There will also be a visit from Flumpa the famous tree frog and Wendy the singing scientist during Enrichment Day, Whitt said

The second event will take place on Aug. 22, the birthday of late zoo Director Les Whitt. This will be a follow-up to an event called Celebrate Les held last September in his memory.

“We talked about it, and everyone wanted to continue it,” Whitt said.

The event — renamed Les Fest — will consist of a run that is “going to be different than everyone else’s run, I’m sure,” Whitt said. There will also be music, food and activities at the zoo after the run.
