Beardsely Zoo hosts Amnesty Day on Saturday

BRIDGEPORT — Those with unconventional pets will have a chance to turn them over to the state Saturday during an Exotic Animal Amnesty Day hosted by Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., residents can bring in any reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, fish and other creatures, and leave them at the Hanson Exploration Station (just outside the 1875 Noble Ave., zoo) without penalty or consequence. All animals turned over at the event become the property of the State Department of Environmental Protection. Domestic animals, such as cats and dogs, will not be accepted.
The DEP and zoo officials announced in May that they were teaming for the Amnesty Day, hoping the event would inspire people to part with animals that are either illegal to own as pets, or that are legal, but too troublesome for them to care for.
All animals must be brought to the zoo in secure carriers.
