Aquarium nurses blind seal back to health, ships it to zoo

Mystic – The Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration’s Seal Rescue Clinic shipped a rescued blind harp seal that it had nursed back to health to its new home at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Mich., on Friday.
The seal is blind in both eyes and can not be released into the wild.
The 1-year-old male seal was originally spotted at Town Landing in Cummaquid, Mass., on Aug. 20. The International Fund for Animal Welfare rescued it the next day because it had become less alert and responsive. The seal was then transferred to Mystic.
Exams revealed the seal had numerous rocks in its stomach and had been blind from birth. The seal was treated with antibiotics and stomach and parasite medications. An aquarium team working with Westerly Hospital gastroenterologists performed an endoscopy to remove the rocks.
