After more than 500 entries and 1,000 votes, the new name for the baby chimpanzee at the Little Rock Zoo is Kendi. The chimp was born Aug. 29.
The name Kendi was submitted by Vicki Pennington of Junction City, AR.
Representatives of the zoo say animal keepers usually name new arrivals, but the staff decided to let the public vote on it. The Great Ape Keepers at the Little Rock Zoo chose the top four. The names were posted in an online survey. “Kendi” received 65% of the vote.
Kendi’s birth was the result of a recommendation from the Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan (SSP) of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). SSP programs are designed to ensure the long-term survival of endangered species.
