NC Zoo looks to expand popular polar bear exhibit

ASHEBORO, N.C. — Officials at the North Carolina Zoo are hoping a multimillion-dollar expansion of one of its exhibits will lead to expansion in the number of inhabitants in the exhibit.
The News & Record of Greensboro reports that officials want to create a polar bear breeding program at the zoo, a move that could mean additional revenue.
The $4.7 million expansion to the polar bear exhibit will accommodate some of the critical elements female bears crave in raising cubs: space and privacy.
The new exhibit will include water, sand, ice and natural playthings, such as a tree trunk.
A fundraising campaign has brought in $1.2 million of the $2 million goal. The plan is to begin construction late next year or early 2011 and to open the exhibit in 2012.
